Official bio…

Pablo Ibáñez Colomo is Professor of Law at LSE Law School. He is also an Ordinary Member at the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal, a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Bruges) and Joint General Editor of the Journal of European Competition Law & Practice (Oxford University Press). He received a PhD from the European University Institute in June 2010 (Jacques Lassier Prize). Before joining the EUI as a Researcher in 2007, he taught for three years at the College of Europe, where he also completed an LLM in 2004. He has been a Visiting Professor at several institutions around the world, including Aix-Marseille University, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México, Kobe University and Torcuato di Tella University.

…and non-official bio

I was born in Madrid; London became my home in 2010. I have not moved since (there was more than enough moving around in my 20s). Like many other people, I did not plan to study law. On the other hand, I have always had a love for teaching, reading and writing, which helps explain how I ended up at a higher education institution doing those very things (and why I feel so fortunate).

If you would like to learn more about me, my trajectory and my unremarkable hobbies, you can check the podcast I recorded with EU Law Live here and the interview I did with Global Competition Review here.

My academic philosophy

I am privileged that I can devote my professional life to teaching and research. No privilege comes without obligations. I understand these obligations to mean, first, that I should be zealous of my independence. Second, that I have a duty to engage with the wider public.

I am always keen to share my views at public events, provided that I do not receive remuneration. I get paid to teach and supervise research work by LSE (mainly) and by the College of Europe. I teach occasionally elsewhere, and in particular in my hometown, Madrid, for the Annual Competition Law Course that was founded by Luis Ortiz Blanco and that Alfonso now runs.

Since I sometimes get the question: I am not interested in consulting opportunities. The same goes for writing expert reports, paid-for papers and speaking at non-public events (such as internal trainings at law firms).

I abide by the ASCOLA declaration of ethics.
