Antitrust Figure of the Day
Heard through the grapevine. At a recent conference, someone close to the General Court mentioned that the average total cost of a judgment would be in the ballpark of €240,000 (!). Don’t know how this figure was calculated, but this ain’t cheap justice to me.
I remind our readers that the average duration of competition proceedings before the Court is 50 months.

Few days ago I obtained the same amount dividing the annual budget of the Court (€ 348.300.000) by the number of cases decided by the Court of Justice, the General Court and the Civil Service Tribunal (1518). And I came to the same conclusion: no cheap justice.

Two-thirds of the Court’s expenditures relate to remunerations and other entitlements for support staff (= staff excluding judges, AGs and registrars). Half of the staff are categorized as linguistic services (which makes it difficult to compare the costs to national courts).
