If you wanted to be extremely “German” it could possibly even be “Prof Nicolas Petit, PhD” – since a PhD and a Dr. are clearly not the same thing 😉 Unfortunately I’m not totally kidding, a few years ago some misguided person wanted to see American PhD holders working for the Max Planck Society in Germany calling themselves “Dr.” on their websites prosecuted for violating http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/englisch_stgb/englisch_stgb.html#p1236
Thankfully nothing ever came out of it…
